Mexican Lime Varieties for Export — Mexico is one of the world's top producers and exporters of limes, with two main varieties dominating export markets:

Persian Lime (Limón Persa / Tahitian Lime) — The primary export variety, especially to the U.S. market. Seedless, oval-shaped, larger and sweeter than Key lime, with a thicker rind that gives it a longer shelf life and better resistance to handling and shipping. Mexico is the world's top Persian lime producer, grown mainly in Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Jalisco (which together account for about 95% of national production), with additional volume from Colima, Hidalgo, Tabasco, Chiapas, and Yucatán.

Key Lime / Mexican Lime (Limón Criollo / Limón Agrio) — Smaller, thin-skinned, very aromatic and highly acidic, with a shorter shelf life than Persian lime. Historically the preferred variety for domestic consumption, though exports are increasing. Michoacán is the leading producer, followed by Colima and Oaxaca — Michoacán's winter harvest window (December–February) lets it enter the market first each season.

Export Snapshot — Over 95% of Mexican lime exports go to the United States, with additional shipments to the Netherlands, UK, France, Canada, Japan, and other European markets. Mexico ranks as the world's second-largest lemon/lime exporter, holding roughly 20% of the global market. Export-grade fruit is selected for bright, uniform green color, firm smooth-to-slightly-dimpled skin, appropriate size, and high juice content, following SENASICA phytosanitary certification for international shipment.
